Büdchentag (Kiosk-Day) – Inside Out Inspired Action

Launched by the French artist JR, the Inside Out Project is a global art platform that enables communities worldwide to stand up for their beliefs and inspire change at a local level. Group leaders create their actions by installing large-scale black‑and‑white portraits of community members in public spaces, forming collective public art interventions. More than half a million people across over 150 countries and territories have participated in group actions addressing topics such as diversity, feminism, racism, climate change, education, and art. To implement such initiatives, one option is to rent a converted van equipped with a photo booth. The printed large-format portraits, previously taken indoors, emerge from the side wall of the vehicle.

In collaboration with the Inside Out team, a mobile photo booth was developed to fit into the Museum Express backpack. As a scaled-down version of the original concept, it can now be deployed in any location. On August 12, 2023, the new photo booth backpack underwent its first test run at the Düsseldorfer Büdchentag (Kiosk Day).

The Inside-Out-Project-Museum Express-photo-booth-backpack remains available for future social projects. Project inquiries are welcome.

DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY – AUGUST 2023 | 34 PORTRAITS

Since 2016, the Büdchentag (Kiosk-Day) has been held once a year in Düsseldorf. Freelance artists and the operators of around 40 kiosks participate in this decentralized and low-threshold city festival. Everyone is invited to participate and get involved. A kiosk serves as a social contact point in every neighborhood, a meeting place for neighbors of all ages, genders, origins and religions. Büdchentag provides a unique opportunity to celebrate this place, as well as the diversity of cultures and communities that make Düsseldorf so special. It is an open community festival with art performances, live music, food, drinks and gatherings.

Equipped with the newly developed mobile photo booth backpack, Sebastian Jung visited all kiosk owners participating in the project on August 12, 2023, to capture their portraits. This action is intended to address the question of who the people behind the sales counters are, and at the same time create space for discussion and exchange. The kiosk owners will also have the opportunity to present themselves to their neighborhood in a new, personal perspective. The portraits taken that day were later projected onto a 15-meter-high building façade on Königsallee, in tribute to the kiosk owners.
